Selwyn College, Cambridge, is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. The college has a strong tradition of choral excellence, with its chapel choir renowned for high-quality music. The college is situated on Grange Road, Cambridge CB3 9DQ, within easy reach of Cambridge city centre.

You must be between the ages of 15 and 22 to apply for this course. If you are 15, you must currently be in Year 11. If you are in year 10, please take a look at our Choral Course in York or at the Junior Choral Courses.

The cost of this course is £1275. There are a number of payment options available:
£250 deposit followed by an invoice to pay the remaining balance via a bank transfer by 31st March 2025
£250 deposit followed by two invoices - one to pay 50% of the remaining balance by 31st March 2025 and the other to pay the remainder by 5th July 2025.
The full £1275 on application using a credit card (plus a 1.5% Stripe transaction fee)
A monthly payment plan to be completed 6 weeks before the start of the course (5th July 2025) following a deposit of £250 on application. (monthly payments will be subject to a 1.5% Stripe processing fee)

The refund policy is the same whichever payment option you choose. A full refund is available if you cancel the place by 5pm on 5th July 2025. 50% refund is available if cancelled after 5pm on 5th July and before 5pm on 26th July 2025. No refund is available if you cancel after 5pm on 26th July 2025. (Stripe processing fees are not refundable.)

SINGING TEACHER Alicia Carroll is an international soprano. She has been a member of The Gabriel Consort for many year as well as working for The Sixteen, Tallis Scholars, Academy of Ancient Musc, English Concert, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and The Cardinal’s Musick. Alicia also sings with London Voices directed by Ben Parry and records regularly with them for film, TV and Computer Games soundtracks. Alicia has mentored the National Youth Choir of Great Britain as well as being one of the singing teachers in the Rodolfus Choral Courses. She dovetails her own singing engagements with her teaching at Downside and Kingswood Schools and the choristers at Bath Abbey

SINGING TEACHER Carys Lane studied at the Royal Academy of music. She performed and recorded extensively, specialising in early music and ensemble work. Over 20 years she performed in The Sixteen, Tenebrae, The Gabrieli Consort, The Cardinal’s Musick, I Fagiolini The Tallis Scholars and The Clerks group. In 1999 she was awarded an ARAM from the Academy for services to music. She now focuses on teaching. Based in Oxford she teaches choral scholars at Magdalen, Merton, Queen’s, Christchurch, Univ and Worcester Colleges. She coordinates the probationers program for the Merton Girls Choir. She has taught for the Rodolfus courses since 1999, and has taught for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain since 2007. She is currently studying to become a Vocal Health Rehabilitation Specialist.

SINGING TEACHER James Oldfield studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and the Royal College of Music. He has performed as bass soloist with Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Opera North, LSO, RPO, The Philharmonia and the Hallé. He teaches singing at Tiffin School and the University of Cambridge (Trinity, Emmanuel and Jesus colleges). His association with the Choral Courses stretches back to 1998 when he first attended a course, and he has since been Assistant Music Staff, Course Manager, Choir Manager of the Rodolfus Choir, Housemaster, and now Singing Teacher.

PRINCIPAL ACCOMPANIST George Herbert was born in Manchester in 2001, and his passion for music was kindled in earnest as a chorister at Manchester Cathedral. George studied German and Music at St John’s College, Cambridge, where he was Organ Scholar. He is now the Assistant Organist at New College, Oxford, and has a varied freelance life: his debut album as a piano accompanist was released last year, he regularly sings with and accompanies Tenebrae, and he has upcoming organ recitals in Berlin and New York.

COURSE ASSISTANT Hebba Benyaghla is in demand as a collaborative pianist and enjoys a diverse career working with many of Scotland’s national companies including Scottish Opera, Edinburgh International Festival, National Youth Choirs of Scotland and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, alongside her roles as a Lecturer and Accompanist at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Hebba was a Britten-Pears Young Artist, an Associate of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Foyle Future Firsts and an alumna of the London Sinfonietta Academy and Oxford Lieder. Hebba has worked with the Rodolfus Foundation on Choral Courses since 2021 in Cambridge, Oxford, Eton and Royal Holloway.

COURSE ASSISTANT British-Jamaican soprano Sophie Taylor-Denton studied Music at the University of Nottingham and postgraduate Education degrees at Homerton and Jesus College, Cambridge. At University, she was a choral scholar at Nottingham Cathedral, singing thereafter with the choirs of OLEM and Jesus College, Cambridge as well as singing with the Rodolfus Choir and National Youth Choir as a youth. She now sings regularly with the BBC Singers, London Voices, Voces8 Foundation, Oxford Bach Soloists, Chineke! Voices, St Paul’s Cathedral Consort, the choir of St Mary’s Bourne Street and other professional choirs in London. Sophie balances singing with music teaching at a leading independent school and working for the Rodolfus Foundation as a choral educator and Trustee.

COURSE ASSISTANT Alexander Eadon is Director of Music at Sherborne School, having held other school positions at KES Southampton, Eastbourne College, Oundle School and Dean Close Cheltenham, as well as organists' posts at Tewkesbury Abbey and Arundel Cathedral. He was a Chorister at King's College, Cambridge and has worked on the Choral Courses for over twenty years and is also a Trustee of the Rodolfus Foundation.

COURSE ASSISTANT Martha Jones has several years' experience as a peripatetic teacher in London and Lancashire and has enjoyed working with several opera companies in their education departments, leading workshops and singing in their operas composed especially for children. After studying at the Royal College of Music and participating in young artist programmes at Carnegie Hall, Ravinia Festival, Britten Pears and Samling, she began her performance career, continuing to teach throughout. Performing highlights include Nerone The Coronation of Poppea (English Touring Opera), Dorabella Così fan Tutte (various including The Mozartists), Annina La Traviata (English National Opera), and Fanny Price Mansfield Park (Grange Festival). She has sung in recital at the Wigmore Hall and orchestral song engagements include Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music (Edward Gardner/Royal Festival Hall), Henze’s Stimmen (Queen Elizabeth Hall), and Mahler’s Rückert Lieder (New English Ballet Theatre). Recordings include The Call with Malcolm Martineau.

COURSE MANAGER Originally from Northern Ireland, Laura Bailie completed her Masters in Choral Conducting at The of Birmingham under the tutelage of Simon Halsey CBE. Laura is currently the Musical Director for various choruses around England including Divertimento, Daventry and HCS Voices- the training choir of Huddersfield Choral Society. In 2023, Laura became co-founder and Musical Director of The Elgar Scholars- Birmingham’s newest auditioned chamber choir of professional singers who are alumni of musical institutions around the West Midlands. Laura is frequently a guest conductor for various choruses and orchestras around the country, performing premieres of new commissions and leading ‘come and sing’ days.

HOUSE PARENT Rachel Miller is a dually qualified dentist and lawyer who has made the move into the music profession, studying for a Masters in Viola performance at Trinity Laban with Richard Crabtree. She is also a Senior Choral Scholar at the Old Royal Naval College under the baton of Ralph Allwood MBE. Rachel has previously worked on both choral weekend and senior Rodolfus courses and is looking forward to another year working with enthusiastic singers.

HOUSE PARENT Quintin Beer attended two Choral Courses as a teenager which he absolutely adored. He has since worked on one course a summer, first as a Course Manager, and more recently taking on the role of House Parent. He held a Choral Scholarship at St John's College Cambridge where he studied Music, and then studied for a Masters in Choral Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music. His main job now is as Director of Music at St Peter's College, University of Oxford, and maintains a freelance career as a conductor. He has worked with a range of ensembles and festivals, including the BBC Singers, Ex Cathedra, the Grange Festival, the St Endellion Festival, the Britten Sinfonia, the Brook Street Band, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Quintin has a passion for choral education, and is thrilled to be working on another Choral Course this summer.
FURTHER INFORMATION
ARRIVAL TIMES
The arrival time on day 1 is different from that of any previous Choral Course. Singers must now arrive between 11:00am and 11:30am on the first day. The course will conclude on the final day between 5:00pm and 6:00pm.

As part of your application, we kindly ask for a brief reference from a singing or music teacher. This reference does not affect your acceptance onto the course. Instead, it helps our directors and singing teachers better understand your musical journey so far. Please note, references are only accepted through our online portal. We welcome applications from singers outside of the UK. However, please note that course fees will include an approximate 3.25% card processing fee.
